Interview - St. Pat’s 2009 Special Interview

Welcome back, we're glad you're here!

In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, we have convinced a friend of ours to drop by and share a nice chat, along with a hefty platter of scones and a pot of Irish Breakfast tea.

You may remember Mickey Seamus Colin O’Flannery Thomas McDougal O’Kennedy James Jack Jimmy William O’Keefe MacGuinness Eamon Bombadil Yeats from last year, when we parted under somewhat unpleasant circumstances. (Mike was sore for a week. I was too, but mostly from laughing.) We were filled with remorse over our decision to illegally imprison dear MSCOTMOJJJWOMEBY, and we begged his forgiveness and plied him with homemade baked goods until he decided that he liked us very well, for big people.

You see, Mickey Seamus Colin O’Flannery Thomas McDougal O’Kennedy James Jack Jimmy William O’Keefe MacGuinness Eamon Bombadil Yeats is a leprechaun. Since he is, of course, from Ireland, and he shares our love of the Emerald Isle, he has consented to answer a few questions for us about St. Patrick, the traditions of St. Patrick’s Day, and one of our favorite Irish bands. One of the perks of being a leprechaun is virtual immortality, so MSCOTMOJJJWOMEBY is perfectly suited to shed some light on this Irish icon, whom he spent some time with during the fifth century.

1.) Now, since St. Patrick was a Catholic priest, and leprechauns are Irish Fay (or faeries) charged with guarding the Fay’s treasure stores, how did the two of you meet and become friends? One would think that your superiors would frown on this relationship.

MSCOTMOJJJWOMEBY: Weal, ya wouldna’ think it, him bein’ a man o’ tha cloth and what, but ‘e was after me pot. Says he needs it tay make up for tha off’rin plate comin’ back a wee bit short on accoont o’ all the heathens being ‘llowed intay th’ church. I gave ‘im a right knock on th’ heid, an’ a’fore ye know, we’re best mates.

2.) What was St. Patrick really like? Did he throw back a few beers or pints of mead with the village people? Er, not the ones that sing YMCA.

MSCOTMOJJJWOMEBY: Decent fella, I reckon, if ya gi’ him a chance. Not like he was a Saint or anythi… or, weal, now tha’ I think back on’t…. Anyway, tha’ aside, I didn’a see any drinkin’, but mos’ly I stay oot o’ tha toons, if ye take me meanin’.

3.) Perhaps one of the most famous stories about St. Patrick alleges that he drove all of the snakes out of Ireland. Is this true? What did he have against our legless friends anyway?

MSCOTMOJJJWOMEBY: Teal ye tha truth, lass, I dunna remember any o the wee beasties a’fore he came along either, so I canna say he ha’ such a problem wi’ ‘em. Sure, I ne’r saw ‘im holdin’ ‘em in church, either tho’.

4.) What is your favorite St. Patrick’s Day tradition? How do you plan to spend the holiday this year?

MSCOTMOJJJWOMEBY: ‘Tis really more o’ a big folk tradition, we just sorty got dragged in after the whole “Lucky Charms” fiasco. I’ll do much as I alwees do, I reck’n. Guardin tha’ bloody pot is a full-time bit, y’know?

5.) The lads and lass of The Mighty Regis are some of our favorite people from Ireland, now making their home in California. Have you heard any of their music? What do you think of it?

MSCOTMOJJJWOMEBY: Oh aye, tha’s tha good stuff, now, an’ no mistake. Tha’ Scotland Ye Owe Us song gets a few plays daily on me iPod. Bloody buggers, always puffin’ their kilts up like they weren’t just fancy skirts. “Oh, we’re Scotland The Brave, blah blah blah… We’re the only one’s brave enough to eat haggis, blah blah blah.” Makes me wanna… well, best not say more, lassie. They say it’s a day for celebratin’, not fightin’.

Huge thanks to Mickey Seamus Colin O’Flannery Thomas McDougal O’Kennedy James Jack Jimmy William O’Keefe MacGuinness Eamon Bombadil Yeats for stopping by to talk to us again. After the way we had to fight him last year, we figured never to see him again. Unpredictable buggers, leprechauns.

This was great! I don’t celebrate this day, but I loved your article!!!

  2. Jeremy Says:

I also read somewhere that there aren’t any woodpeckers in Ireland- but I think that’s more due to lack of trees rather than Saint Pat’s doing….Slainte, Ben Dover and Phil McAvitty

  3. Mike Says:

@ Soapstone - Thanks, these St. Pat’s Day interviews are a lot of fun to write.

@ Jeremy - I hadn’t heard that, but a quick google search reveals your opinion to be the prevailing one. Apparently there are a lot of species of critter Ireland is sorely lacking in. Makes sense, I guess, little island like that with a bunch of people on it…. huh.

  4. Marc Gunn Says:

    Way fun! :)
